I passed my final exams in 1990 and then went on to pursue my “military training” via the Receiver of Revenue in Durban. During my most informative years at SARS, whilst wanting to start my own business, I kept an eye open for prospective clients. I eventually found one client and that soon became two, then three and so forth. Towards the end of my two years at SARS I resigned and accepted a fulltime job with a company selling timeshare, as their Accountant. During this time I continued to source clients in need of an accountant. However, I did not find my move to full time employment very challenging, so quickly changed things up and got a job as the Financial Accountant for the Wakefield’s Group of Estate Agents based throughout KwaZulu-Natal. With my dream of running my own practice not yet fulfilled, I continued to do as much work in my spare time as possible.
This endeavour built up a tidy sum of clients and when it reached approximately 25 clients, I decided to resign from Wakefield’s to pursue my dream.
My first office was based in our home in our converted garage and meetings with clients took place in my living room! Our company name at the time was Action Accountants. Once I had built a good client base and knew I was meeting the needs of my clients, I began to charge very competitive fees. In the first two years, my wife and I had managed to build the business up to over 100 clients and employed 5 staff members to assist us with these clients. The next step was buying a new home, separate to the house from which the Accounting firm was run.
The business continued to grow from strength to strength. Client numbers grew and so did the number of staff (Meet the rest of my team). We quickly outgrew the residential premises, which was no longer ideal for a busy Accounting firm, so my team and I moved the business to 139 Old Main Road in Pinetown. Today, we have a new name – Professional Accountants and Tax Consultants or PATC for short and can be found at Remote Office: 34 Hillside Road, Cowies Hill (Pinetown), 3610. We currently have over 1000 happy clients and over 20 years’ in the industry behind us.
My humble beginnings in the 80’s have led PATC into the Millennium with more success than I could ever have imagined. I continue to market, promote, further my studies and partner with other companies to be able to continue providing excellent service at very affordable prices.
